The History of Dehradun

The first known mention of the district of Dehradun was in the Skanda Purana. As per it, Dehradun was part of a region called Kedar Khand. By the end of the 3rd century BCE, it was included in the kingdom of Ashoka, the great.

Ashoka:

In the 1600s, Guru Ram Rai was the first to settle down in this city. Other establishments gradually developed around his "Dera" or settlement.

Some books suggest that the region was part of the Garwhal kingdom under the Gorkhas till 1815, after which it was annexed by the British. This annexation was followed by a few district changes for better management, till 1968 (after Indian independence) when it was finally under the Garwhal district.
