Places to visit
Out of all the times I have visited Dehradun, here is a list of my top 5 places that I keep coming back to:
1. Forest Research Institute(FRI) : The Forest Research Institute is perhaps the most picturesque tourist sight in Dehradun. With its British style architecture, it is a beautiful place to visit if you like long walks in beautiful gardens or are interested to know more about trees and forests. FRI has many museums inside the main building. I would recommend going to the Timber museum which has a transverse section of a 704-year old Deodar tree.
2. Mindrolling Monastery: Although it is slightly out of the main town, it has been a popular tourist attraction for many years as it is the largest Buddhist Vihara in India. It has a very welcoming atmosphere with small shops dotted all around the monastery. The main temple itself is huge with other statues all around the area. Visiting this beautiful monastery would definitely give you the peace of mind you need in this busy world. I would recommend taking a small car while visiting the monastery as the roads leading to the monastery are not in the best of conditions.
3. Robber's cave/Gucchupani: This cave got its name from the fact that robber's used to hide here after robbing. The cave itself is 600 metres long and it gets narrower while going inside. It is a exciting and adventurous place to visit as one has to go through knee deep water. The views of the mountain from the cave are magnificent, thus making it a wonderful place to visit. I would recommend visiting in the summer season to have a fun and relaxing time with your family. Also remember that water snakes are present so you need to be careful!
4. Clock tower and Paltan Bazaar: The Paltan Bazaar which is at a stretch of 1.5km has the Clock tower or as the locals call it "Ghanta Ghar" right in the centre. Thus, you can visit two tourist destinations at once. Paltan Bazaar is known for being Dehradun's main market and for hosting the well known and loved bakery- Ellora's where you can try any of their baked good (trust me the experience will feel nostalgic).
The clock tower is an important landmark built by the British before independence, it is believed that the ticking of the clock could be heard by a person at any end of the city. I would recommend walking around the market as it is a busy and bustling market
5.Ram Rai Gurudwara: Sikhism is a popular religion in Dehradun as the founder of the city Ram Rai was the son of the seventh Guru of the Sikhs. The Gurudwara was established by Ram Rai, the founder of the present city of Dehradun. This is one of the oldest Gurudwaras in the city and a popular destination for pilgrimages. I would recommend visiting 5 days after Holi, the festival of colours as an annual festival is held then.
