My Personal Analysis

Image
I have been visiting Dehradun for as long as I can remember and consider it to be a home away from home. Besides, my grandparents have a house in Dehradun which would be our vacation house to escape from the summers of Delhi. Other than that, my grandmother was born in Dehradun and I always hear about her stories about being a young girl in Dehradun. She was actually born in the Forest Research Institute(FRI) as her father was a bamboo scientist. Hence, visiting FRI every time we are in Dehradun is very important for my family as we learn about new stories from my grandmother and her siblings.  For me, Dehradun will always remind me of nostalgic thoughts and my family. Hence, it is my favourite city.  ← (My grandmother and her siblings in FRI)     (My family and I in our house in Dehradun in 2021)                                             ...

Places to visit

Image
Out of all the times I have visited Dehradun, here is a list of my top 5 places that I keep coming back to:  1. Forest Research Institute(FRI) : The Forest Research Institute is perhaps the most picturesque tourist sight in Dehradun. With its British style architecture, it is a beautiful place to visit if you like long walks in beautiful gardens or are interested to know more about trees and forests. FRI has many museums inside the main building. I would recommend going to the Timber museum which has a transverse section of a 704-year old Deodar tree. 2 . Mindrolling Monastery:  Although it is slightly out of the main town, it has been a popular tourist attraction for many years as it is the largest Buddhist Vihara in India. It has a very welcoming atmosphere with small shops dotted all around the monastery. The main temple itself is huge with other statues all around the area. Visiting this beautiful monastery would definitely give you the peace of mind you need in thi...

The History of Dehradun

Image
The first known mention of the district of Dehradun was in the Skanda Purana. As per it, Dehradun was part of a region called Kedar Khand. By the end of the 3rd century BCE, it was included in the kingdom of Ashoka, the great.  Ashoka: In the 1600s, Guru Ram Rai was the first to settle down in this city. Other establishments gradually developed around his "Dera" or settlement.  Guru Ram Rai:  Some books suggest that the region was part of the Garwhal kingdom under the Gorkhas till 1815, after which it was annexed by the British. This annexation was followed by a few district changes for better management, till 1968 (after Indian independence) when it was finally under the Garwhal district.  Uttarakhand map:                                                                          ...
